Tuesday 30th January. A new day and a new course would take the entire regatta fleet 32 nautical miles from Tyrell Bay, Carriacou to the finish line just off of Fort Jeudy Point, Grenada. Tyrell Bay bustled with boats as crews prepared for the second race day of the 2024 Pure Grenada Sailing Week, sponsored by new Race Day sponsors Clarkes Court Boatyard & Marina.
The weather conditions were great again with east to south easterly winds and about 12-15 knots of wind.
The previous day’s start time and order remained the same, CSA 1 class were up first, followed by CSA 2, CSA 3, Spirit and Multihull.
CSA 3 had an especially tight start with the 8 boats vying for the favoured end by the committee boat. This certainly got the attention of the committee boats skipper. There were some fluky holes and puffs within Tyrell but once out of the bay a tight line was held towards the first mark, Bird Island.
It wasn’t long before spinnakers were up and boats were past Carriacou’s southern tip and into the 14 nautical-mile stretch of open ocean between Carriacou and Grenada. We believe all passed outside Grenada’s offshore islands before the 16 nautical-mile downwind run along Grenada’s windward coast and around to the island’s southern shore.
The majestic Classic Galatea with Judd Tinius and crew, took line honours with an elapsed time of 4:26:22, followed very closely by Mathew Barker’s The Blue Peter with an elapsed time of 4:27:45, both racing in the Spirit Class. Punch Croisieres from CSA 1 crossed the line in third place with an elapsed time of 4:46:58. The Classics love this type of sailing.
With the bulk of the fleet finished, many boats entered Petite Calivigny Bay to stay the night in Le Phare Bleu Marina, the prize giving and party venue. Le Phare Bleu Marina is the home to an old Swedish Lightship (circa 1900) that houses the essential services for their marina guests. The weary sailors found the first essential service in the bar with icy cold beers while results were calculated. Another day of no protests.
The confirmed results were released, for CSA 1 Tristian Marmousez’s GFA Caraibes – La Morrigaine, placed first. Jean-Francois Terrien’s Sang Neuf coming second and Category 5 placed third. This will certainly be an exciting class to follow.
CSA 2. Katy Campbell with Panacea X in first place. Richard Oswald’s Emily of Cowes in second place and Peter Morris’s Jaguar placed third.
CSA 3, in first place Jib Jab with Kevin Headon, Sandy Mair’s Cricket coming second and Mark Chapman’s Dingolay in third place.
Winning the Spirit Class, of course, Galatea. The Blue Peter with Mathew Barker taking second place and Bluejay of Portsmouth with Andy Young and crew.
Multihull Class winner Justin Scott’s Uhuru in first place. Robbie Yearwood Spirit of Everest in second place followed by David Slater’s Delphine.
