Something New for Lay Day

Wednesday 29th January

Race Day 3 sponsored by interCaribbean for the interCaribbean Airways & Pure Grenada Sailing Week. The 2025 edition brings something new as the normal mid regatta lay day was Race Day 1 for the new Light Keel Boat (under 28ft) class. As registrations came in it was obvious there were two clear classes needed J80 and Beach Cat.

The J80 class had 3 boats all from the same stable with Chris Rundlett & Chrystal Young who have just created Grenada Sailing School. The aim of Grenada Sailing School is to foster a vibrant sailing community, boost the local economy, and prepare Grenadians for careers in marine trades through comprehensive sailing education and exciting sailboat racing events. The three boats Jedi, J/ Star and Joxer were skippered by Miles Webb, Chris Rundlett and Yvonne Brandt. Yvonne heading the all-female crew and we did check with Yvonne and the ladies where happy for us to highlight them.

The Beach Cat class, all entries are pure Grenadian. Serrant Edwards with Apex Hurricane 5.9. Sep Nimrod with Getaway a Hobie Getaway and Nicholas George with Tora F18 skippered by Noah Bullen head coach for the Petite Calivigny Yacht Club Youth Program.

A new course was created around the cans off Prickly Bay and True Blue Bay. Starting an hour later than all the other races at 10am with three races set for the day. The start time was delayed due to the committee boat dragging in the gusty wind conditions and choppy waves.

For some of the boats it was clear they were not in tune with the start sequence as there was a huge amount of daylight between some of them. The wind conditions were challenging though.

J80 class results saw Jedi placed first with Miles Webb followed by J/ Star and Joxer placed third.

The Beach Cat class results saw Tora with Nicholas George in first place, Apex and Serrant Edwards in second and Getaway in third.

The prize-giving for Race Day 3 sponsored by interCaribbean Airways took place at Le Phare Bleu Marina but this time poolside where the racers who arrived on Tuesday from Carriacou had enjoyed their lay day. When one of the two or three squalls came through people were seen dancing to the macarena in the pool and on the deck in the rain. The DJ read the mood and kept on playing in the rain, quite a fun atmosphere.
